Home Design: Mix Your Metals

While meandering through the West Bottoms for this previous First Friday’s, a friend mentioned “I usually don’t like chrome, but I wouldn’t mind it for this piece. I just don’t know if it works with everything else.” Which immediately led me to say MIX YOUR METALS!

I’ve realized that brass is polarizing in the design world these days. Clients either want all brass - or no brass as they’ve already had to go through getting rid of it once. The easiest way to keep up with trends is to ignore them and do what feels right to you and your personal preference. It tends to help keep things timeless, as well!

Personally, I love a good mixed metal. It can really elevate a space and leaves more freedom in design. Take a look at these stunning examples.

This bath combines brass hardware and fixtures with black metal mirrors and chrome switch plates. Stunning!

This space shows how mixing metal finishes on lighting can really help each fixture stand out. By placing the brass chandelier near the black pendants, both get their moment to shine.

This bedroom is a total stunner, and the mixed metals between the lighting and furniture hardware make it feel incredibly curated. How cozy.

Remember, there are no rules in art (or design).

Cheers!
